HYMN FESTIVAL

ENTRY DEADLINE: October 20, 2021                            ENTRY FORM: 

LOCATION: Oakwood United Methodist Church (2215 58th St.)

TIME: 9am - 12pm

  • Festival encourages students to praise God with their skill at any age!

  • Possible goals: play for church services, weddings, Sunday school class or accompany soloists, choirs or congregations 

  • Non-Student Affiliate event; also open to non-LMTA teachers ($35 extra fee)

  • Students play with music on the music stand; judge might look at music or just listen, so NO Extra copies for judge; students may not enter same pieces from previous years

  • Not a competition; Superior, Excellent, Good, or Fair are ratings on critique sheet; music must flow!

  • Teachers will receive certificates to fill out and present to their students at festival or at a later time (no other personal awards allowed at Festival site)

 

HYMN TIMING CHART

Please use the guidelines below to estimate the time each student needs. 

  • Level I-V: 5 minutes                        

  • Level IV-VII: 10 minutes

  • Level VIII: 15 minutes

LEVELS

Choose music that fits time allowed for that level.

 

LEVEL I-III: 2 hymns with no introductions from any simplified hymn book (beginner-elementary); list level of book

 

LEVEL IV: 2 hymns with introductions from hymnal (late elementary-early intermediate)

 

LEVEL V: 1 hymn with introduction from hymnal & 1 option (late elementary-early intermediate):

  • opt. 1 - may repeat verse of 1 hymn with embellishment or improvisation

  • opt. 2 - may substitute 1 hymn with a piece suitable for a prelude, postlude, or offertory (may be a duet played with teacher)

 

LEVEL VI: 3 hymns with introductions from hymnal (intermediate)

 

LEVEL VII: 2 hymns with introductions from hymnal & 1 option (intermediate):

  • opt. 1 - may repeat verse of 1 hymn with embellishment or improvisation

  • opt. 2 - may substitute 1 hymn with a piece suitable for a prelude, postlude, or offertory (may be a duet played with teacher)

  • opt. 3 - may play 3 hymn or praise and worship arrangements from lead sheets (melody must be heard over chords in other hand)

 

LEVEL VIII: 4 hymns/pieces (intermediate-advanced) with one of the following options*: 

  • opt. 1 - themed worship service: Patriotic, Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, traditional chorales, etc.

  • opt. 2 - worship mix: 1 choral/solo accompaniment (may sing with it), 1 traditional hymn, 1 worship arrangement, 1 lead sheet

  • opt. 3 - wedding: 2 prelude pieces, 1 processional, 1 recessional

  • opt. 4 - duets played with teacher or other suitable piano partner (may be 2 festival students)

  • opt. 5 - hymns or praise and worship arrangements from lead sheets (melody must be heard over chords in other hand)

*committee is open to other options, but they must be approved before the festival.
